- Story Text: Hundreds of members of a Peruvian labor union protested outside the Spanish embassy in Lima on Wednesday (September 29) in a show of support for a striking workers in Spain, who say labor reforms by Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero violate their rights.
Among Zapatero's austerity measures for the 2011 budget is a labor reform making it easier for Spanish companies to hire and fire employees.
The measures touched off a strike in Spain that trade unions said had 10 million people, about half the workforce, off the job.
Mario Huaman, the secretary of Peruvian union, showed his support for the strike across the ocean.
"This is a march to show support and solidarity with the general strike of 'Commission Workers' (in Spain) because they (the government) are trying to implement a regressive labour reform which will do away with the basic social and labour rights against the Spanish workers," he said.
Martha Martinez, who is a Spanish citizen, called the strike a success.
"We are here, a group of Spaniards representing the fundamental unions because there was a general strike in Spain today, a strike that has been declared a success, against a law that intends to savagely reduce labour and social rights which were obtained after many years," she said.
Thousands of Peruvians work in Spain, mostly in labor and service positions.
Zapatero cut civil servants' wages by 5 percent as part of an austerity package after investors punished Spanish borrowing costs earlier this year over fears the country could be heading for a debt crisis that would trigger a Greek-style bailout.
The Spanish prime minister also plans overhaul state pensions and raise the retirement age from 65 to 67. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
