- Story Text: Israelis race up 54 floors to the top of local skyscraper, in annual stair race.
Hundreds of Israelis participated on Friday (November 21) in the annual stair race to the top of the Tel Aviv Azrieli skyscraper. The race, taking place for the 6th year, brought together professional and amateur runners of all ages and levels.
Participants started at the minus 4 floor parking lot in the tower's basement, and ran up 1144 stairs to the 49'th floor- where the physical exertion and clear view of Tel Aviv took their breath away, climbing a total of 54 floors.
"This is the sixth time, the sixth annual competition of the running up the stairs at the Azrieli Center. Azrieli Group is very proud of this contest, we have beautiful weather today. Israelis they are running up this contest, they are winning very good places in national, international competitions. We are very proud of them," Itay Reshef, CEO of Azrieli buildings told Reuters.
Competitors are strongly advised to start training for the run at least eight weeks ahead, with a combination of aerobic exercises and strengthening of muscles.
"I am feeling very tired and it was really hard. And now I am going to sleep for four days," one participant, Asaf Azar, told Reuters.
Categories included top runners, beginners, a group heat and amateurs who were satisfied with completing the run.
The winner of the elite competitive run for 2008 was Emanuel Balkhasan setting a time of 7 minutes and fifty eight seconds.
A similar race has been taking place for the last 31 years in the New York Empire State Building, where runners climb 86 floors to an altitude of 320 meters. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
