- Story Text: Although reportedly terminally ill with prostate cancer, actor Dennis Hopper made a public appearance in Hollywood on Friday (March 26) to accept a star on the Walk of Fame. The actor was bandaged and visibly frail-looking, but seemed to be in good spirits.
According to court documents, Hopper is too weak to undergo chemotherapy treatments. The papers list the 73-year-old actor as weighing just over 100 pounds (45kg). When he was first diagnosed, he said that he hoped chemotherapy would improve his condition enough for him to return to work.
In addition to his cancer, Hopper blamed his banged-up look on the paparazzi who, according to the actor, took him by surprise when they called out his name.
"I took a terrible fall because I have no muscles. So I fell directly on my face, and I had my glasses in my hand. I got pretty screwed up. But anyway, I know you have a tough job but sometimes maybe you ought to be a little more sensitive."
In addition to struggling with cancer, Hopper is also immersed in bitter divorce proceedings with his wife, Victoria. The couple have a six-year-old daughter together, who was on hand for the unveiling.
An acclaimed actor and filmmaker, Hopper has been twice nominated for an Academy Award: as Best Supporting Actor for his role as an alcoholic father who gets sober in "Hoosiers," and for Best Original Screenplay of the counter-culture road movie "Easy Rider," a film he directed, starred in, and co-wrote.
All in all, he has starred in more than 150 films including "Apocalypse Now," "Blue Velvet," and "Speed."
Hopper's star was the 2,403 star on the famed sidewalk along Hollywood Boulevard. Several celebrity A-listers showed up to join in the celebration, including Jack Nicholson and Viggo Mortensen. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
