- Story Text: A small number of people in the Egyptian capital's suburbs on Friday (February 18) held a demonstration to show that not everyone in Egypt wanted to oust the president, toppled after 18 days of daily revolt by hundreds of thousands of Egyptians demanding reform.
The pro-Mubarak protesters, on Mustafa Mahmud square, in al-Mohandseen city , held up posters praising Mubarak as a hero. Other posters said although they had wanted reforms they had not wished for him to leave government.
Egypt was ruled by the ousted Mubarak, 82, for thirty years but on January 25th Egyptians began demanding his departure. Mubarak finally stepped down on February 11th.
The little gathering took place as those who toppled Mubarak were preparing for another 1 million-person march on Tahrir to celebrate their victory in ridding Egypt of the man who ruled through fear for three decades.
"I would like to say to him (Mubarak) that we are your sons, and we are very grateful for your achievements. You are the hero of war and peace. We will never forget you," one Mubarak supporter said.
"I would like to say to him (Mubarak) that we all love you. Yes we were demanding a reform for your regime, but we did not demand that you leave. It is worth saying thank you very much for your achievements," said Mustapha, another supporter of the ousted president.
The Muslim Brotherhood, which says it seeks to achieve a democratic Islamic state by peaceful means, is seen as the only truly organised bloc in Egypt but many of the pro-Mubarak supporters said whoever replaces Mubarak will not be as strong a leader. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
