- Story Text: Over two hundred animal rights activists holding the corpses of farm animals held a demonstration in central Madrid on Saturday (December 11) to mark International Animal Rights Day.
The gathering, organised by Igualdad Animal (Animal Equality), aimed to raise awareness about the suffering experienced by animals used for human consumption.
Sharon Nez, spokesperson for the organisation, called on people to end animal suffering by adopting a vegan lifestyle.
"On International Animal Rights Day, we think there is only one way to end their terrible suffering and the death they are victims of and that is adopting a vegan lifestyle, not consuming animals or products derived from animals and respecting them day to day," she said. "What we see is that some animals are taken care of, such as dogs and cats, and those animals are slaughtered and eaten in places like China. There isn't really any difference between a dog and a pig, so what we want to talk about today is that animals should be respected, no matter their species, just like anyone of us."
The animals used in the demonstration were found dead in containers and farms by Igualdad Animal activists and used in the demo, the organisation's website said.
Naomi, a Madrid resident watching the demo, agreed with Igualdad Animal's message and called the consumption of animals inhuman.
"Eating living things and corpses, that is not human or maybe it's too human and that's why we engage in this kind of savagery," she said.
Javier, another Madrid resident, agreed with the need to respect animal rights but was doubtful human behaviour would change.
"We are not about to change, we would first have to change our own kind, we would have to abandon violence, abandon wars and weapons and then, with a new social conscience, have a common view of what life is," he said.
