- Story Text: United Nation's Secretary General Ban Ki-moon used the upcoming soccer World Cup as a platform to urge all nations to support the 1Goal campaign which seeks to ensure that every child has an opportunity to education.
UN chief addressed the guests, including South African president Jacob Zuma, at a charity gala dinner on Tuesday (June 8) in Johannesburg, three days before the month-long tournament kicks off in the city on June 11.
"Nine out of ten children in the developing world are enrolled in primary education, 95 % of children are registered in the school but still there are 70 million who are out of school," Ban said.
Half of the children in the world who are unable to access basic education are in Africa.
The 1 Goal campaigns seeks to get governments to allocate more money to education, texts and teachers. It aims to ensure that all boys and girls complete primary schooling by 2015.
Prominent names such as Zinedine Zidane, Mia Hamm, Jessica Alba, Bono, and Hiliary Clinton have lent their voices to the campaign. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
