And a supermarket of course is like that, and even more at night." SVARCAS LISTENING CAST AT PANEL (SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) ACTRESS LEONOR SVARCAS, SAYING: "It was really great working with Adrian (Biniez). There was a lot of dialogue, a lot of listening and openness for our ideas. We worked together, Horacio (Camandule) and me, but also a lot on our own with the director. It was very good, because we could bring our own ideas into the script. This is always very important for an actor, so one can become a part of the project." CAMANDULE LISTENING JOURNALIST LISTENING (SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) ACTOR HOARCIO CAMANDULE, SAYING: "I come from a theatre background. The movie making became a big surprise to me with this film. This is really a great thing that I discovered with Gigante. I had done some experimental short films as well. But with this film I got my breakthrough in the movie acting." - Story Text: Newcomer-director Adrian Biniez from Uruguay explores a different kind of love story in "Gigante", one of the early entries in competition at the Berlin film festival on Sunday (February 8th).
The movie tells the touching tale of Jara, a burly, shy security guard at a Montevideo supermarket who becomes infatuated with cleaner Julia, whom he watches on monitors linked to security cameras and then follows obsessively.
The normally gentle giant is not afraid to use force when necessary, and the viewer is left guessing about his true intentions when he runs amok in the supermarket after learning Julia has been sacked.
Director Biniez spoke to Reuters Television about his movie - the first he has presented in Berlin,
"I think most of the environments of working spaces are, I dont know, if I can really call them jails, but surely they are claustrophobic. And a supermarket of course is like that, and even more at night," he said of the atmosphere of his movie.
Actor Horacio Camandule said playing the heavy metal-loving Jara had helped him overcome his own shyness. Besides that, he said there is also a financial perspective to playing in cinema:
"In my country as an actor you feel more comfortable acting for movies, because you can earn your living as an actor. Playing at the theatre you have to sacrifice a lot," he explained.
But for now, just to be in Berlin is a great opportunity, Camandule added. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
