- Story Text: Argentine President Cristina Fernandez said the economy and markets are "terrorizing" people as they face uncertain futures and lack job security.
The center-leftist president addressed a crowd of supporters made up mostly of young Peronist activists and workers at an event on Monday (October 17) designed to mark 60 years since the first Argentine television transmission on October 17, 1951.
The date also coincides with Argentine Loyalty Day when in 1945 a massive labour movement demanded the release of former President Juan Peron from jail later restoring him to the presidency in 1946 elections.
The day is considered the founding day of Peronism, an Argentine political movement founded by Peron and his then wife, Eva Peron, to which Fernandez belongs.
The daughter of Fernandez and her late husband Nestor Kirchner, Florencia Kirchner, made a rare appearance among the multitude of young activists cheering on her mother.
The first daughter who very seldom makes public appearances was seen smoking a cigarette with other supporters at the event which centred on the Peronist movement.
Fernandez, who has a massive lead over rivals ahead of Sunday's (October 23) presidential election suggesting an easy victory for a second four-year term, said she did not want to politicize the day because Peronism suggests the inclusion of all "workers and women" to take part in Argentine politics.
She warned of a new form of "terrorism" used against the masses via the economy and stock markets around the world.
"Today there's another kind of violence which is the economy. The stock markets and markets, that terrorize the people with job losses the destruction of work with currencies that go up and down and fluctuate, people who don't know if they will be able to get their retirement or if they will lose their jobs. This is a true form of terrorism to discipline society so that no one can think differently than what the turbines of economic and media power say on a global level," Fernandez said.
The crowd of nearly a thousand supporters and Peronist loyalists quieted as jumbo screens lit up with images of Eva "Evita" Peron addressing a massive labour demonstration 60 years ago.
The public address was the first event to be transmitted by Argentine television.
Monday's event was held at the former ESMA Naval Mechanics School which was used as a torture and detention centre during the 1976-1983 "Dirty War."
The infamous building was recently converted to a cultural centre under Fernandez and will host two of Argentina's public television stations. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
