- Story Text: Mexico arrested 13 alleged Sinaloa cartel drug traffickers in possession of heavy weapons on Friday (April 15) in the Mexican city of Guadalajara.
After receiving an anonymous tip, police arrested the men who were travelling on board an SUV.
Public Security Minister Carlos Najera said the men had been previously arrested and released.
"They are hitmen. They could've been taking part in several homicides there have been in the metropolitan area and kidnappings, but that will have to be established by the prosecutor's office. The alarming thing is that several of them had already been arrested in possession of weapons and drugs. At least three of them were arrested by police in March of this year in Zapopan and they are now on the street again with weapons and drugs. So we see that the policemen's effort is, disgracefully, lost."
One arrested suspect, Carlos Quiroz, denied participating in criminal activity and being involved with the Sinaloa cartel.
More than 37,000 people have died in drug war violence over the past four years, also damaging the chances of Mexican Felipe Calderon's conservative party retaining the presidency in elections next year. The killings have also raised tensions with the United States, Mexico's co-sponsor in the campaign against the cartels and its top trade partner. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
