- Story Text: Ninety-eight workers at the Sodimax car accessories plant outside Paris threatened to blow up the site on Friday (April 2), following a year-long row over redundancy pay, in a form of protest becoming increasingly regular in France.
Few observers thought the protesters would genuinely carry out their threat to detonate gas canisters that had been placed in protest at plans to close the plant.
"There's nothing new. Delegates have gone off to negotiate. About ten minutes ago some riot police turned up. So what do you think we're waiting for?," one protester said.
"Money," replied one worker when asked what he wanted.
"A decent redundancy plan," added a second.
"A decent redundancy plan. A plan that respects us. They're giving us peanuts and you see what that's getting. What are we in their eyes? We pay taxes," said a third employee.
It was announced in April 2009 that the plant was to close, but workers are unhappy with the money they have been offered and are calling for the reopening of negotiations with the management. The employees occupied the factory late on Thursday, draping banners around the site and lighting fires outside to attract attention to their protest. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
