- Story Text: Thousands of pink and white flowers in bloom amidst some of Washington's most famous monuments herald the start of the National Cherry Blossom Festival and the arrival of spring in the U.S. capital.
The festival celebrates the gift of 3000 cherry blossom trees to the U.S.
by the mayor of Tokyo in 1912.
The event which kicked off on March 28 and runs until April 12, is expected to draw a million visitors to the city.
The tidal basin which is ringed with cherry blossom trees is a popular stop for many visitor. Snapping photos in front of the famed trees, many visitors seemed impressed with the blossoms."
"I think it's wonderful. It's the reason we came here,"
Lucia from Seattle said. Lucia has visited Washington previously but never during this particular time of year and said she felt it was important to make the trip with her family. It's a once in a [lifetime] experience especially with my kids. It's really worth it," she said.
Her sentiments were echoed by others.
"They are beautiful. It's an...opportunity to see nature at it's greatest. It's a very exciting time to be down here," John from Maryland said.
Even the gray overcast sky did not put a damper on visitors' enthusiasm.
"It's incredibly beautiful out here. The weather was a little bit better yesterday but it's still gorgeous," Jordan from Florida.
