- Story Text: Jubilant German soccer fans celebrated Schalke's crushing 5-0 victory over MSV Duisburg in the German Cup final in Berlin on Saturday night (May 21).
Shortly after the game ended at the German capital's Olympic stadium, hundreds of Schalke fans descended onto the Kurfuerstendamm shopping boulevard, singing and dancing and drinking no small amounts of beer.
Schalke 04 won the German Cup for the fifth time on Saturday, crushing second division Duisburg 5-0 to book a European spot for next season.
One young woman, who gave her name as Melanie, said "I don't think there was one Schalke fan who expected this result. But it's beautiful and it was worth driving here on Friday."
She described how it took her and her friends "six hours and we were in a traffic jam for two and a half hours and it was definitely worth it. It was beautiful."
Jens, another Schalke fan dressed in his team's colours, said he had predicted "a tight 2-1 but 5-0, that's just fantastic! I never would have expected that."
Schalke fan Christian had mixed feelings and although he insisted he was in a partying mood, said "I am not sure whether or not this was (Schalke goalkeeper) Manuel Neuer's farewell. Too bad really."
Schalke captain Neuer, who lifted his first major trophy to kick off wild celebrations amid 30,000 travelling fans, looks close to a deal with Bayern Munich after saying he would not extend his contract with his boyhood club past 2012.
Fifteen-year-old Carlos simply said "we won 5-0. What more do you want? We got the trophy, we achieved everything, one hundred percent." - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
