- Story Text: Police fired tear gas bombs to disperse angry demonstrators near the Israeli embassy in Amman on Friday (January 8), amid nation-wide calls for the expulsion of the Israeli ambassador from the kingdom.
Crowds threw rocks at anti-riot police, who responded by beating many with batons before making arrests.
At least three people were injured in the clashes, which took place as tens of thousands took to the streets to protest against Israel attacks on Gaza that have entered its third week, claiming more than 765 lives, including 223 children and more than 3000 injured.
"This is a world-wide day of anger in solidarity with Gaza. When Jordanians from all political orientations demonstrate, they express that supporting Gaza is a duty for every Arab and Muslim," said Abdul Hadi Falahat, president of Jordan's Agriculture Engineers Association.
Egypt has seen its biggest demonstration yet in protest of Israel's offensive on Gaza, with between five and ten thousand demonstrators gathering Alexandria on the Mediterranean coast.
Demonstrators gathered outside the Qaid Ibrahim mosque in downtown Alexandria after Friday prayers, waving Palestinian flags and shouting slogans against Israel and in support of Hamas.
At the Alexandria protest, the largest in the city in recent memory, one sheikh said that Israel was fighting a losing battle.
"We are announcing that we are with Gaza, and the battle will continue until Gaza and Hamas are victorious," he said.
Meanwhile in Algeria, demonstrators took to the streets of the capital Algiers after Friday prayers to protest at Israel's operations in Gaza.
Algerian Police had earlier banned any type of gatherings from taking place but thousands defied the ban and marched to show their solidarity with the Palestinians. Men and women burned Israeli flags before clashing with police who tried to break up the demonstrations.
Egyptian efforts to broker a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip appeared bogged down on Friday because of disagreements with Israel over how to secure the border to prevent Hamas from rearming, diplomats said. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
