SOUND EFFECTS: SV Cummings and Cripps seated at desk - Cummings speaks: "Well, Sir Stafford, we are all very glad to see you home again and we all think you have done a very fine job of work. I think large numbers of people would like to know from you something of a picture of conditions in Russia to-day and something of the ordeal that the Russian people and the Russian armies have had to pass through." SV Cummings and Cripps seated at desk - Cripps speaks: Well, now the one thing that has sustained Russia in this tremendous fight against the German mechanized Army has, I believe, been the courage and determination of just the ordinary man and woman in the country. Naturally, the army has been well organized and well equipped and has fought with the greatest courage and valiance, but if it hadn't been for the determination of the ordinary Russian peasant and his wife and, indeed, of his child too, to take every conceivable step to prevent the advance of the Germans, I don't think the Russian Army alone could have succeeded. CU Cummings Speaks: "But, could you tell me whether the people have worked in the factories and in the fields close up to the battle areas as we hear they did in Leningrad throughout the investment of that city?" CU Cripps speaks: "Yes, certainly, in all the cities - in Russia - in Moscow, in Leningrad, the people have continued working right up to the last possible moment. Indeed, in Leningrad, they continued to manufacture munitions right through to the present time and they are now supplying from Leningrad, practically the whole of the armies that are fighting round Leningrad." CU CUMMING SPEAKS: In what way can the British people best help their Russian friends? Cripps speaks: Fortunately they can't share the acute suffering of the Russian people, we can at least share the effort which is made to overcome those sufferings and the British people can make a real contribution to the shortening of those sufferings by sending every ounce of material help that they can
