- Story Text: Robbie Williams commented this week that he was sorry to be missing out on the World Cup in Germany because of his 'Close Encounters' tour, but there was no doubt where his fans would rather be on Friday night (June 9, 2006) as 80,000 ticket holders descended on Dublin's home of Gaelic football, Croke Park Stadium.
The city even provided extra train services to help deal with the multitudes who had tickets for the show. The massive crowds gathered around the stadium for a few drinks in the sun before the concert, and most made no secret of their feelings for Williams.
"I love him so much, I don't know what-- no, I do know what I'd do if I got him," said one woman.
"I love his singing, I love his body, I love him. I think he's brilliant, I can't wait to see him," enthused another fan.
"I want to make love to him," said one man, proving Williams is not just a hit with the women.
Friday night's concert kicked off Williams' mammoth European Summer Tour, which has him scheduled to play more than 40 gigs across 14 countries.
It was a big weekend for rock and roll in Dublin - the biggest the city has ever seen. Including the 80,000 people who bought tickets to the Williams concert, almost 250,000 music fans were expected to swarm into the city to see The Eagles, Guns 'n' Roses and Metallica also play at other venues over the weekend as part of the Download Festival.
Robbie Williams' European concerts are the first leg his 'Close Encounters' World Tour, which will see him go on to visit South East Asia and Australia later in the year.
His Summer tour, which is mostly sold out, hits the following cities
