- Story Text: Desmond Tutu was awarded the Fulbright Prize on Friday (November 21) for his work in promoting peace in South Africa and around the world.
Tutu, The Anglican Archbishop Emeritus in South Africa, received the 50,000 U.S. dollar award at a U.S. State Department ceremony. He was an instrumental figure in the struggle to end apartheid in South Africa.
Previous winners of the prize include former U.S. Presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton, former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell, former Czech leaser Vaclav Havel and former South African President Nelson Mandela.
The Fulbright prize "recognises and rewards outstanding contributions toward bringing peoples, cultures, or nations to greater understanding of others," according to the association's Web site.
The Fulbright prize was initiated in 1993 in honour of William Fulbright a former senator who chaired the U.S. Senate's Foreign Relations Committee from 1959-1974 and championed American involvement abroad. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
