- Story Text: Actors Viggo Mortensen and Charlize Theron hit the red carpet for the Los Angeles premiere of "The Road."
The screening took place at the Grauman's Chinese Theater as part of the AFI film festival in Hollywood on Wednesday (November 4) night.
Mortensen stars as a father traveling across the country with his young son in a post-apocalyptic world. The two are on a journey searching for civilization amidst nomadic, cannibalistic tribes.
Theron plays Mortensen's wife in the film.
The screenplay for "The Road" is based on a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Cormack McCarthy.
McCarthy also penned "No Country For Old Men," which later became an Oscar award-winning movie directed by Joel and Ethan Coen.
Theron, 34, talked about what she views to be the primary message of the film and praised McCarthy's writing.
"I think that's what was beautiful about Cormack's writing. That we can-- you know, that he can write about the worst-case scenario as a cautionary tale and really show the worst in humanity and the best in humanity. You know, maybe we can take the best and go with that."
Mortensen also commented on what he believes is the key theme of the film.
"That kindness is the most important thing in life. It's more important than money. Than food. Than having a house. Kindness. Love. You know. It's simple. And we don't take any shortcuts getting to that conclusion. It's a very hard journey. But that's what the realization is at the end I think."
Mortensen, 51, was born in New York to an American mother and Danish father who met in Norway. He spent most of his youth in Denmark and Argentina and is fluent in several languages.
Theron talked about why she enjoyed working with the actor.
"He's just great to work with, you know. It's like how do you pull a rabbit out of a hat, you know. I don't know how he does it. It's just that when I am next to him it's really powerful. Thanks."
Theron, an Academy Award-winning actress, was born and raised in South Africa.
Robert Duvall also stars in the film.
The movie was directed by Australian John Hillcoat.
