- Story Text: As protesters on Wednesday (June 15) continued to demand the immediate formation of a transitional council, Yemen's deputy minister of information Abdu al-Janadi dismissed the possibility.
"How we can form transitional council? Who will elect it? If we started to talk about a transitional council we will find ourselves sinking in endless conflicts, every one of us wants to use this council as a council of revenge," he said.
Protesters again took to the streets of Sanaa to demand the immediate formation of a transitional council.
Military defectors and anti-government protesters chanted "we want a transitional council" and "the people and the army are one hand."
Protester Aref Abdullah said "we want transitional council immediately, if this does not happen the revolution will intensify all over the country, we will escalate our actions and go to the presidential house and palace."
Soldiers who have defected from the militray to the protesters cause held a parade through the streets of the capital on Wednesday.
Al-Janadi condemned what he described as an assassination attempt on President Ali Abdullah Saleh, who is receiving medical treatment in Saudi Arabia.
"Whoever is behind this ugly criminal incident (Saleh's assassination attempt) - it is not one person or one party but many parties that seeks to inherit what Ali Abdullah Saleh will leave behind," he said.
He also said the nation is fighting a battle with al-Qaeda which has become an all-out war.
"The war with al Qaeda now is not guerrilla war, it is a regular war, they have a large number of fighters and they are trying to enlarge their Islamic emirate, they are acting in large numbers in order to isolate the southern provinces and control the commercial routes," said al-Janadi.
Shortages of fuel, electricity and water are acute in the capital, and violence in the southern province of Abyan, whose capital Islamist gunmen seized last month, has worsened.
Saleh has not been seen in public since the attack on his palace earlier this month. He is clinging to power despite nearly six months of protests aimed at toppling him. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
