- Story Text: Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido said Monday (June 8) that Libyan military commander Khalifa Haftar's plane landed in Venezuela on Sunday (June 7).
"Yesterday (June 7), Libyan rebel Khalifa Haftar's plane landed," Guaido said during a session convened by the Organization of American States (OAS).
Guaido did not provide evidence that Haftar had arrived nor any details about how he had acquired the information. Venezuela's information ministry did not immediately reply to a request for comment.
The United States and other countries are investigating ties between Haftar and Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, and an alleged trip to Caracas by the Libyan rebel weeks ago.
Haftar is a retired general from Libya. In 2014 he became head of the self-proclaimed Libyan National Army. After liberating Benghazi in July 2017, he set out to extend his presence throughout the country and unify the government under his command.
Guaido also criticized Venezuela's alliance with Iran, saying in the last two months 17 flights from Iran have landed in Venezuelan territory.
