- Story Text:Gyms and hair salons in India's western state of Maharashtra reopened on Sunday (June 28) despite it being hard hit by coronavirus.
Maharashtra, home to India's financial hub of Mumbai, accounts for more than 25% of cases in the country.
India reported over 17,000 new coronavirus cases over the last 24 hours, pushing the country's total above 500,000, federal health ministry data showed on Saturday (June 27), with infections surging in major cities including the capital New Delhi.
India - with a population of 1.3 billion - has the world's fourth-biggest outbreak of the virus that causes COVID-19, below only the United States, Brazil and Russia in confirmed infections, according to a Reuters tally.
Despite the rising cases, India's interior minister Amit Shah said on Sunday (June 28) that the country has fought the battle well. "If we compare it to the global scenario, than our numbers are very good," Shah said.
He added many reform measures had been introduced to cope with the economic impact caused by the pandemic.
India allowed several public places to reopen after the two-month-long closure earlier this month, however, the federal government has extended the lockdown in high-risk zones.
Infections are expected to continue rising steadily in the country. Experts advising the federal government say the authorities should now prioritize reducing mortality over containing the spread of the virus.
