- Story Text: Russian President Vladimir Putin and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko inaugurated a new WW2 monument near the town of Rzhev, not far from Moscow, on Tuesday (June 30).
The Rzhev Memorial is dedicated to the memory of Soviet soldiers who lost their lives in battles near Rzhev from 1942-1943, during the Great Patriotic War.
The opening of the memorial complex was originally planned to be held on May 9, 2020, on the day of the 75th anniversary of the Soviet Victory in World War Two, but the ceremony was postponed due to the spread of the coronavirus.
Putin and Lukashenko payed tribute to the veterans and laid flowers in memory of the soldiers who fought in the fields near Rzhev.
Last week on Wednesday (June 24), both leaders attended the large-scale military parade on Red Square dedicated to the Soviet Victory in WW2, which was also posponed due to the pandemic.
