- Story Text: A fall in demand for the garments due to the coronavirus pandemic has left the hosiery industry in India's northern Ludhiana city with an uncertain future as the demand for finished goods remains low and lack of labour to carry out day-to-day activities smoothly.
Ludhiana accounts for nearly 90 percent of the country's woolen hosiery industry that is not just popular in domestic market but also attracts clients from Europe, Dubai, U.S. and Russia as well.
A nationwide lockdown announced by Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi had already brought heavy losses to businesses as the factories were closed but in spite of government unlocking the economy the work in the factories are far from gathering pace in the absence of full strength of workers.
"The market response is low and the people are also scared to work, the counter parties, corporates are scared as they fear that the lockdown can be imposed again. Also many people have lost their jobs, businesses are down as it was closed since many months so the demand of customer is less," Co-Founder, Pinnacle Fashion and Retail, Akhil Sachdeva.
