- Story Text:China on Wednesday (July 8) accused FBI Director Chirstopher Wray of making comments "full of political lies" after Wray urged China-born people in the United States to contact the FBI if Chinese officials try to force them to return to China.
Wray on Tuesday (July 7) said Chinese President Xi Jinping has "spearheaded" a program called Fox Hunt aimed at strong-arming people born in China living outside of the country who are regarded as threats to return home in order to silence criticism of Beijing's political and human rights policies.
"China's launch of its overseas Operation Fox Hunt and the recapture of suspects who fled abroad is safeguarding the dignity of the law and social justice. In recent years, many countries have actively carried out relevant law enforcement cooperation with China," foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said during a regular news briefing in Beijing.
Wray issued the unusual appeal in an address to the Hudson Institute think tank in which he reiterated U.S. charges that China is using espionage, cyber theft, blackmail and other means as part of a strategy to replace the United States as the world's dominant economic and technological power.
