- Story Text: Union members and employees demonstrated on Wednesday (July 8) at Airbus headquarters in Hamburg against a plan to cut thousands of jobs within a year after the coronavirus outbreak has paralysed air travel and let the jet business to a 40% slump.
Empty chairs were placed at the entrance to the company's plant in Hamburg representing the families employed there who could loose their jobs.
Europe's biggest aerospace group has said it would cut 5,000 posts in France, 5,100 in Germany, 900 in Spain, 1,700 in the UK, and 1,300 elsewhere by mid-2021, for a core total of 14,000.
The broader tally includes another 900 job cuts planned before the crisis at its Premium AEROTEC unit in Augsburg, where union members also protested on Wednesday.
Airbus faces tough talks with governments as well as unions, which have pledged to fight compulsory redundancies.
A 2008 restructuring triggered strikes and protests.
