- Story Text: A large Black Lives Matter mural was unveiled in the New York City neighborhood of Harlem on Wednesday (July 8).
Local artists began painting the mural located in the center of Harlem on Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd at 125th Street on Friday, July 3. The two-block long mural was painted with colorful symbols of the African American experience.
Similar Black Lives Matter murals are planned in each of New York City's five boroughs.
Another mural is planned on Manhattan's Fifth Ave. in front of Trump Tower. U.S. President Donald Trump has called the planned 5th Ave. Black Lives Matter mural a "symbol of hate".
The Black Lives Matter movement gained momentum after the death of George Floyd who died in police custody in Minneapolis.
Community activist Erika Ewing who helped coordinate the mural project said, "This has been a healing space."
"Kids were here playing in the letters. Parents were bringing their kids to come see something that they could be proud of," Ewing added.
Eight of the artists who helped create the mural came to the unveiling and posed for photographs.
"This is tapestry that's imprinted forever embedded in our Harlem streets."
