- Story Text: The coronavirus-spurred trade slowdown has created a nightmare year for growers and exporters of India's mangoes, with both production and demand plummeting this year.
Domestic and international markets for the sought-after sweet seasonal fruit have been hit as harvests and exports have dropped due to the coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent lockdown.
"The government has completely shut the markets, so how will we work in this situation? All the mangoes are rotting and the farmers are facing losses. Though the federal government had exempted the growers from export taxes, we will not get any benefits from that and the mangoes will also rot," said a mango grower on Saturday (July 11) in Meerut city of Uttar Pradesh, which has been witnessing a sudden spike in coronavirus cases.
The state has declared a complete lockdown for two days starting from Friday (July 10) after the cases in Uttar Pradesh reached to more than 35,000.
Indian mangoes, which account for 60 percent of the world's production, are in great demand and known as the 'king of fruits' but exporters are yet to tap the global market potential. India being the largest producer of mangoes in the world produces mangoes worth millions a year.
Mangoes from the country are exported to many Middle Eastern and European countries from India. They are used to make desserts, juice, shakes, mousse, and puree. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
