- Story Text: Ventura Sheriff's Office held a second news conference on Thursday (July 9) providing further information about the search for Naya Rivera.
The "Glee" star has been missing since Wednesday (July 8) after renting a boat with her four-year-old son on Lake Piru, north of Los Angeles.
Earlier in the day, officials announced the search for Rivera had turned from a rescue to a recovery mission, as authorities presumed she drowned.
Sergeant Kevin Donoghue told the media, "We have recovered video evidence from the dock that shows Miss Rivera and her son being the only two people getting on board the boat. We've had no indication after talking to her son that Miss Rivera made it sure so the focus of our search efforts are in the water at this time."
Asked why the search was taking so long, Donoghue replied "In a lake, the visibility isn't good so if you've ever watched underwater video and you've seen divers in the ocean, typically the visibility in the ocean water is much better. So in the lake, the visibility is terrible. In this particular lake in that area, there's a lot of trees and plants and such that are under the water that can cause entanglements. It makes it unsafe for the divers and it makes it a more complicated search."
Sergeant Donoghue said he was also concerned the boat may have moved from its initial spot and drifted away from where Rivera went missing.
He said "That's one of the things that complicates the search, is we have to go with where the boat was found initially and then work our way out from there."
He also added, "If the body is entangled with something beneath the water, it may never come back up."
