- Story Text: Dozens of Hong Kongers attended a ceremony to mark the third anniversary of the death of Chinese Nobel Peace prize-winning dissident Liu Xiaobo on Monday (July 13).
The democracy activist, who promoted a pro-democracy charter calling the end to one-party rule, died of liver cancer at 61 under guard, while serving an 11-year prison term for "subversion". He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize while locked away.
The Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China held an indoor ceremony where a minute's silence was observed and prerecorded messages of condolences by overseas Chinese activists were shown.
Veteran democracy activist Lee Cheuk-yan, chairman of the Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China, said the anniversary was a good time for Hong Kong people to learn from Liu's lesson.
Liu was one of the drafters of a 2008 declaration called "Charter 08", which called for the end of China's one-party rule. Hours before it was due to be published, Liu was detained. A year later, he was sentenced to 11 years on a charge of inciting subversion.
Liu's wife Liu Xia, who was under effective house arrest after her husband was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2010, was allowed to travel to Germany, where she now lives, for medical treatment.
