- Story Text: Hong Kong media tycoon Jimmy Lai, veteran pro-democracy activist Lee Cheuk Yan, Albert Ho Chun-yan and 10 others arrived at West Kowloon Magistrates' Courts on Monday (July 13) for incitement charges from last year.
Lai, who faces separate unauthorised assembly charges, three organisers of the annual Tiananmen vigil and nine politicians and activists were charged with inciting people to take part in an illegal gathering on June 4, after police banned the event citing anti-coronavirus measures.
"We are supposedly on trial but we believe it is the Hong Kong government and the police that should be put on trial and will be put on trial because of their suppression of our right to mourn June 4th, our right to assembly for the candlelight vigil, which has been on going for 30 years," Lee said outside the court. A minute of silence was observed for the late Nobel laureate Liu Xiaobo who died of liver cancer three years ago today.
Police denied an application for the annual June 4 candlelight vigil on public health grounds, but activists, followed by thousands of others, entered the park in a peaceful protest.
The hearing will continue in September 15.
