- Story Text: Los Angeles residents on Tuesday (July 14) threw their support behind the California governor's decision to clamp new restrictions on businesses, as coronavirus cases and hospitalizations soar across the state.
Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, on Monday (July 13) ordered bars closed and restaurants, movie theaters, zoos and museums across the nation's most populous state to cease indoor operations. Gyms, churches and hair salons must close in the 30 hardest-hit counties.
"I think they have to. It all seems like it's so out of control," said Meredish Quill, a 47-year-old mother of three, who was out shopping with her daughter.
"I don't think they have a choice really. If the numbers just keep going up and up and up, it's the only logical solution is to shut things down and try to get a hold of it," she added.
California, along with Florida, Arizona and Texas have emerged as the new U.S. epicenters of the pandemic. Infections have risen rapidly in about 40 of the 50 states over the last two weeks, according to a Reuters analysis.
"I think it is very wise, we've had resurgence and we really may need to take more precautions until there is a vaccine," said Candace Moore, a 73-year-old Los Angeles resident.
"On a serious note, it's a good thing, you know what I'm saying? Because out health is more important than anything so it's a good thing, I'd say, yes," added Jiovanni, a 25-year-old from Boston.
Newsom said the move to close businesses was critical to stemming a surge in COVID-19 cases that have strained hospitals in several of California's rural counties.
