- Story Text: Move over coronavirus. This frisky Greater Rhea reportedly "pecked" at Covid-positive President Jair Bolsonaro outside the Alvorada Palace on Monday (July 13), as the leader stepped outside during his quarantine recovery.
Bolsonaro is often seen on the grounds of the Alvorada, where South America's large flightless bird the Greater Rhea grazes on the field outside. According to local media, the bird is seen "pecking" at the president during feeding.
Reuters video captured the moment the large bird moves his beak in the direction of Bolsonaro, followed by the Brazilian President waving his hand away.
After the incident, Bolsonaro's critics took to social media with messages such as "nature is healing" in an apparent dig at the president following the incident.
Bolsonaro announced that he had tested positive on July 7. He is reported to be in good health after taking the unproven drug hydroxychloroquine.
More than 1.8 million people in Brazil have tested positive for coronavirus and over 72,000 have died. Only the United States has worse statistics.
