French President Emmanuel Macron arrived aboard a military vehicle for this year's Bastille Day ceremony on Tuesday (July 14) as part of celebrations happening in the shadow of the novel coronavirus crisis.
This year's military parade and ceremony are set to be held in a limited form in the 8.6-hectare Place de la Concorde square instead of the usual Champs Elysees avenue.
The celebrations will feature a limited public presence due to restrictions brought up by the new coronavirus outbreak.
Celebrated nationally since 1880, Bastille Day usually recognises France's military personnel, although this year, health workers are in the spotlight for their commitment during the peak of the pandemic in the country in March and April.
The military parade will feature more than 2,100 military personnel, half the number from 2019's celebrations.
Four countries - Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Luxembourg - are also invited this year as guests for the ceremony for their help in evacuating patients in eastern France, one of the French epicentres of the virus that had seen an overload of patients in hospitals.
While the traditional fireworks display by the Eiffel Tower will take place, the public will be barred access to the foot of the touristic monument.
