Thousands of Palestinian worshippers rallied after Friday prayers at Al-Aqsa Mosque, the third holiest site in Islam, in Jerusalem's walled Old City on Friday (October 30) to condemn the republication of Mohammad cartoons in France.
The demonstrations came as tens of thousands of Muslims protested in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Palestinian territories after killings in a French church prompted a vow from President Emmanuel Macron to stand firm against attacks on French values and freedom of belief.
In Jerusalem, protesters chanted: "A nation whose leader is Mohammad will not be defeated".
"We hold the French president responsible for acts of chaos and violence that are taking place in France because of his comments against Islam and against Muslims," said Ikrima Sabri, the preacher who delivered the sermon at al Aqsa.
Israeli border police dispersed the protesters who marched outside the compound and detained three Palestinians, a police spokesman said in a statement.
In Qalandia near Ramallah, in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, Palestinians trampled and burned French flags and an effigy of Macron.
In Gaza, ruled by Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas, hundreds of Palestinians took part in anti-France rallies, chanting: "With our souls and blood we will redeem the Prophet."
France has allowed displays of cartoons, which are considered blasphemous by Muslims.
A knife-wielding Tunisian man shouting "Allahu Akbar" (God is Greatest) beheaded a woman and killed two other people in a church in the French city of Nice on Thursday (October 29) before being shot and taken away by police.
The attack came just under two weeks after a middle-school teacher in a Paris suburb was beheaded by an 18-year-old attacker who was apparently incensed by the teacher showing a cartoon of the Prophet Mohammad in class.
After the beheading, Macron declared war on "Islamist separatism", which he believes is taking over some Muslim communities in France.
But Macron's call has angered Muslims in many countries and sparked protests and calls for boycotts of French goods.
