- Story Text: "Harry Potter" star Miriam Margolyes turns 80 on Tuesday (May 18).
Born in Oxford in central southern England in 1941, the British-Australian dual national first cut her teeth in theatre.
Margolyes became known as one of the storytellers on BBC childrens' television series "Jackanory" in 1968, and played a number of other roles on the small screen, including larger-than-life characters in "Blackadder" and "Oliver Twist" in the 1980s and happy seamstress Frannie in 1990 U.S. comedy "Frannie's Turn".
However, it was Mrs. Mingott in Martin Scorsese's 1993 Oscar-winning period drama "The Age of Innocence", co-starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Michelle Pfeiffer and Winona Ryder, that won Margolyes the best supporting actress BAFTA award a year later.
The actor is best known as Professor Sprout, who teaches Hogwarts' witches and wizards horticulture in the "Harry Potter" films and helps fight the Dark Lord. She first appeared in 2002 film "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets", opposite young stars Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson.
Last year, Margolyes returned to the small screen as Sister Mildred in multi-award-winning British midwifery drama series "Call the Midwife".
This year, the actor will star as Granny Vera in Serbian film "Next to You" ("Pored Tebe"), written and directed by Stevan Filipovic.
A sequel to the Serbian filmmaker's 2015 film "Next to Me", the story is set five years later when the characters are living in times of COVID-19 and a state of emergency exists, but politicians are accused of capitalising on public anxiety surrounding the virus.
