- Story Text: Irish actor Colin Farrell turns 45 on Monday (May 31).
Born in Castleknock, greater Dublin, Ireland in 1976, Farrell is most recently known for his starring role as the circus elephant handler in the 2019 live-action remake of Disney's "Dumbo".
The Irish actor's screen career has spanned across several film genres, from psychological thriller to romantic fantasy.
In 2009 Farrell won a Golden Globe for best actor in a musical or comedy in Oscar-nominated director Martin McDonagh's "In Bruge". The actor plays hitman Ray who has to lie low from gangsters in the Belgian city after a job goes wrong. Fellow Irishman Brendan Gleeson is another hitman tasked with 'babysitting' the guilt-stricken Ray.
Farrell was nominated in the same Golden Globe category in 2017 for Yorgos Lanthimos' comedy "The Lobster" about singles finding a partner in a specific time period, or face being transformed into a creature of their choice.
The actor reprised Arnold Schwarzenegger's 1990 role in sci-fi action adventure "Total Recall", leading the cast in a 2012 remake as Quaid, a factory worker turned spy.
In 2015 the actor took on the role of romantic protagonist in fantasy film "Winter's Tale", playing a supernatural demon who falls in love a woman intended to be the victim of a planned robbery.
Farrell has worked alongside many of Hollywood's veteran actors, including Nicole Kidman in "The Beguiled" and Lanthimos' "The Killing of a Sacred Deer" in 2017. He also starred with Samuel L. Jackson in 2003 cop thriller "S.W.A.T".
Farrell is set to return to the big screen in the upcoming DC Comics film "The Batman", scheduled for release in 2022, playing supervillain character Penguin, the arch enemy of Batman.
