- Story Text: Extinction Rebellion climate activists gathered on a beach in Cornwall's St Ives on Friday (June 11) calling on G7 leaders to take action on climate change.
Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) wealthy nations are gathering in nearby Carbis Bay where they will meet for three days to discuss issues ranging from COVID-19 vaccines and economic recovery to climate change and geopolitics.
The activists, wearing masks depicting world leaders as other were dressed as blackbirds, demanded a commitment to carbon neutrality as soon as possible.
"World leaders have committed to being carbon neutral by 2050, that's too late. It's like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. There's a crisis and the ship is going down and we're just tinkering around the edges and we need to do something more," an unnamed protester said.
The G7 is made up of the United States, Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan. Representatives from the European Union also attend. This year South Korea, South Africa and Australia will attend parts of the summit. India, also an invited guest, will participate in some of the summit virtually.
