Relations between Britain and the European Union dominated the start of the second day of the G7 summit on Saturday (June 12), as both sides stuck to their opposing positions, even after U.S. President Joe Biden encouraged them to find a compromise.
Since Britain completed its exit from the EU late last year, relations between the two have soured, with both accusing the other of acting in bad faith over part of their Brexit divorce deal that covers border issues with Northern Ireland.
At a Group of Seven summit in southwestern England, a meeting of the world's largest advanced economies, Prime Minister Boris Johnson held talks with French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and top EU officials Ursula von der Leyen and Charles Michel.
The EU told London once again that it must implement the Brexit deal in full and introduce checks on certain goods moving from Britain to its province of Northern Ireland. Britain again called for urgent and innovative solutions within the part of the deal called the Northern Ireland Protocol.
When the trio took their seats on Saturday, Johnson said "I'm delighted that all the protocols seem to have gone alright so far, and we've got the chairs".
Von der Leyen responded "impressive, who would've thought of that".
The joke referred to a meeting in April between Von der Leyen, Michel and the Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara when the EU Commission president was given a seat on an adjacent sofa.
Outside of the seaside resort where the three-day summit is taking place, campaign groups staged a number of protests including a mass paddle-out by ocean activists and rallies of demonstrators calling for action on climate change.
The meeting between the leaders from the United States, Japan, Italy, Germany, France, Britain and Canada as provided an opportunity for campaign groups to highlight the issues they say the G7 must address.
