- Story Text: Preparing bridal bundles, volunteers from an Algerian charity are organising a mass wedding for 30 couples.
In the ornate baskets are traditional wedding shoes, clothes and handbags, as well as other items making up the wedding trousseau.
The event is organised and funded by Ihcen association, a charitable organisation in the north African state.
As well as clothes for the bride and groom a traditional feast is prepared by women in the town of In Salah for the wedding banquet.
"We are preparing this traditional dish for this collective wedding. We wish them a happy wedding, and we hope that god will bless this good initiative from Ihcen association," said volunteer cook Cherifa.
A wedding in Algeria is a costly affair, and many of the young couples tying the knot don't have the means to wed.
Among those attending the celebration were a number of dignitaries including Manar Sobheya, the Palestinian Ambassador's wife.
"The aim (of this initiative) is to share the joy of those who are less fortunate. We feel happy to see this solidarity. God Almighty and his messenger say: "God help the servant who helps his brother.' So it makes us happy to share the their happiness and to discover these new traditions, and we feel delighted to see these people coming together. And all these things lead to solidarity among the members of society,'' she said as women ululated and played the tablah.
For the young grooms, traditions were marked with the application of eyeliner and henna to their hands.
Twenty-nine year old Abdelmalik Mohamed is among those marking his big day, and he thanked the association for its support and assistance. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
