It has a lot of heart and as comedy. It sort of checks all those boxes. But it's dealing with a character who you already know the fate of this character. So, it's going back a couple of years and it's kind of uncovering how she got to that final sacrifice. Or what makes her who she is that she would sacrifice for her family in that way. It unravels her character in a way that's beautiful. And it also introduces some new characters and sets the stage for something different." - Story Text: Comic book Marvel fans showed up and showed out at a red carpet fan event in New York on Tuesday (June 29) for the much-anticipated film "Black Widow."
Die-hards in cosplay (the practice of dressing up as a character) struck their best super-hero poses before heading in for an early look at the highly anticipated film.
"We're obsessed with Marvel, we're big fans," fan Brianna Torrez told Reuters. "Being here and being a part of the premiere is just such an honor," she said.
Actor David Harbour, who plays Alexei Shostakov, a.k.a. the Red Guardian, was on hand to greet fans, something he said he has been craving throughout the pandemic.
"I miss people. I love people. I love social interaction. For a while, I thought it was completely dead and I was terrified. So, I'm very happy to be back," Harbour told Reuters.
The Marvel Studios movie stars Scarlett Johansson who plays Natasha Romanoff, also known as the Black Widow, the Russian-born spy-turned-Avenger.
The film is among a slate of upcoming major releases postponed from last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and which cinema operators hope will revive ticket sales.
A recurring character in the Marvel cinematic universe since 2010's "Iron Man 2", Romanoff finally gets a standalone movie with "Black Widow" in which the character revisits her past.
Harbour said the film stays true to the Marvel brand.
"It's dealing with a character who you already know the fate of ... So, it's going back a couple of years and it's kind of uncovering how she got to that final sacrifice or what makes her who she is," Harbour said.
"It unravels her character in a way that's beautiful. And it also introduces some new characters and sets the stage for something different," he added.
Similar "Black Widow" fan events were also being held in other cities including London and Los Angeles.
"Black Widow" will be released both in theaters and on the Disney+ streaming service July 9.
