- Story Text: A street theatre featuring a giant puppet of Alice and talking flowers marked the 150th anniversary of Lewis Carroll's 'Through the Looking-Glass' and 'What Alice Found There' in the English city of Oxford on Saturday (July 3).
A host of events held in different local venues celebrated all things Alice in Wonderland on Oxford's annual Alice's Day festival, attracting young visitors to share the magic of Carroll's creations.
Some events were held online to allow participation in line with England's COVID-19 restrictions.
Lewis Carroll - also known as Charles Lutwidge Dodgson - was a lecturer in mathematics at Oxford's Christ Church, and some of the animals, friends and places around Oxford became incorporated in the stories he created, Oxford University Museum of Natural History explains.
'Through the Looking Glass', published in December 1871, tells of Carroll's much-loved heroine Alice going through a mirror and then travelling back in time to help her friend, the flamboyant Mad Hatter.
It was the sequel to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and is known as the first of the Alice stories to have gained widespread popularity.
