- Story Text: The Emmy nominations were announced on Tuesday (July 13) morning and of course, with the announcement, there also comes the snubs, surprises and game-changers.
Marc Malkin, the senior editor of Variety, highlighted what he thought the biggest snubs were, saying "You look at something like 'The Underground Railroad', this is a series that got huge critical praise, yes, it got a bunch of Emmys but no acting nominations. People are really surprised by that and someone like Nicole Kidman, who seems to get nominated for anything she ever does, did not get nominated for 'The Undoing'."
Kidman did not place in the lead actress in a limited series, but Malkin pointed out that that category, which consists of Kate Winslet, Michaela Coel, Cynthia Erivo, Anya Taylor-Joy and Elizabeth Olsen, was unusual.
He said "When you look at the lead actress in a limited series or a movie, that race is tight. You can make a case for every single one of them to win. Usually, you look at these characters and say 'ok, that person's in there but they're not going to win'. Any one of these women can win."
Michaela Coel's 'I May Destroy You' may have been snubbed at the Golden Globes but the Emmys have rectified that wrong, according to Malkin.
He also pointed out that Disney+'s nominees, 'The Mandalorian' and 'WandaVision' were game-changers.
He said "I think that's a real changing of the guard here in Hollywood and showing that comic book adaptations do have a real shot at becoming award winners."
Diversity is always a hot topic when nominations are announced.
He said "When you do look at the Emmy nominations, there is a lot of diversity. You have MJ Rodriguez, the first trans woman to be nominated in a major acting category for 'Pose'."
One of the biggest surprises of the nominations was the inclusion of 'Emily in Paris'. The Golden Globes were mocked for including the Netflix show in their nominees earlier in the year.
Malkin said "As much as people love to hate 'Emily in Paris', it keeps getting nominations so someone - not just someone, there are people out there who really love 'Emily in Paris' no matter what the haters say."
The Emmys will take place on September 19.
