- Story Text: The 12,000 families displaced due to fighting between Afghan forces and the Taliban said on Saturday (July 17) their situation was dire and were waiting for help.
Some of them were being housed in a highschool in Takhar province, in the northeast of the country.
"We were not helped or even given a carpet. Not even a dog can live here, and if we do not have to, we will not stay here for a day. You see our situation for yourself," said Mohammad Amin, one of the many living in the classroom which had a little more than mats on the floor.
The UNHCR has said an estimated 270,000 Afghans have been newly displaced inside the country since January, bringing the number of people forced from their homes to more than 3.5 million.
Taliban insurgents have already captured all the districts in Takhar province but are facing resistance from Afghan forces and armed civilians in and around the capital, according to local reports which could not be independently verified.
Recent territorial gains by the Taliban come as foreign troops led by the U.S. military withdraw from Afghanistan after 20 years of war, leaving the task of pulling the country from a spiralling security crisis to local forces.
