- Story Text: An International Olympic Committee (IOC) member from South Korea tested positive for COVID-19 upon arrival in Tokyo on Saturday (July 17).
Ryu Seung-min become the first IOC official to contract the virus ahead of the opening ceremony of the delayed Olympic Games.
In a now deleted Facebook post, Ryu, a table tennis Olympic gold medalist, said he was tested negative twice prior to departure and had received two doses of vaccines.
Earlier on Saturday, Tokyo Olympics organisers reported the first case of COVID-19 at the athletes' village, along with 14 other new cases connected to the Games that begin next week, raising fresh doubts over promises of a "safe and secure" event.
One staff member from Czech Olympic team also tested positive for COVID-19 after arriving in Tokyo on a charter flight from Prague, Czech Olympic officials said on Saturday, adding that all the athletes were fine and in the Olympic Village.
