- Story Text: Several Indian states, including the most populous Uttar Pradesh state, are reimposing partial lockdowns to curb the spread of coronavirus.
Major Indian states had begun lifting strict lockdowns as the nationwide tally of new infections dropped to its lowest level. However, with the easing of the restrictions, crowds have spilled onto the streets and marketplaces, threatening another spike in infections.
Authorities in Uttar Pradesh imposed weekend lockdown to tackle the spread of coronavirus.
As the cases soared, northeastern Manipur state imposed a 10-day-long complete lockdown to halt the spread of the deadly virus that has killed over 1,300 people in the state.
One of New Delhi's famous shopping destinations, the Sarojini Nagar market, was also closed for violation of COVID-19 norms.
A third wave of infections is likely to hit India by October, and although it will be better controlled than the last outbreak, the pandemic will remain a public health threat for at least another year, a Reuters poll of medical experts showed.
India on Sunday (July 18) reported 41,157 new coronavirus cases over the last 24 hours, taking the nationwide tally to 31.1 million, health ministry data showed.
The number of deaths rose by 518, taking the total to 413,609, according to ministry data. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
