Zorro is joining Indy for the fifth "Indiana Jones" adventure due for release in 2022.
Antonio Banderas, the Spanish star of "The Mask of Zorro" announced on his official Twitter account on Friday (July 16) that it was an "an honor (to) join on the screen one of the most charismatic heroes in the history of cinema", Indiana Jones, played by Harrison Ford since the first "Raiders of the Lost Ark" in 1984.
Directed by James Mangold ("Logan") and executive produced by "Raiders" director Steven Spielberg, the film, for which the title and plot are yet unknown, also co-stars Mads Mikkelsen, Boyd Holbrook, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Toby Jones, and Shaunette Renée Wilson.
In June this year, Ford, 79, injured his shoulder while rehearsing for a fight scene for the new movie, Walt Disney Co. said.
Ford's big-screen return as the bold, Fedora-wearing archaeologist was originally scheduled for release in 2019 but that date has been pushed back multiple times. Disney said in 2016 that it was going ahead with a fifth installment, being shot in Britain's Pinewood Studios.
Banderas, who tested positive for COVID-19 on his 60th birthday in August last year, has a career spanning more than 100 movies, including co-starring with Ford in the action-adventure "The Expendables 3" in 2014.
In 2020 Banderas was nominated for the best actor Oscar for his lead role in Pedro Almodovar's autobiographical movie "Pain and Glory". The actor won best actor Goya at the Spanish film awards the same year for the same film.
Created by filmmaker George Lucas, the "Indiana Jones" franchise has grossed nearly $2 billion at the world box office with four films and amassed a global fan base.
"Indiana Jones 5" comes nearly 14 years after "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," in which Ford's Jones reunited with his former love Marion, played by Karen Allen, and discovered he had a grown son, Mutt Williams (Shia LaBeouf). The film received mixed reviews.
