And I know our women's team over here has certainly led the charge there and we've got a heck of a good men's team, too so I think it's exciting times. - Story Text: "Ted Lasso" star Jason Sudeikis on Thursday night (July 15) showed support for black England soccer players who have suffered racial abuse online after their team's defeat in the Euro final.
Sudeikis attended the season two premiere of the hit Apple TV+ comedy series, about an underdog English soccer team coached by an American, wearing a shirt bearing the names of England players Jadon (Sancho,) Marcus (Rashford,) and (Bukayo Saka) who all missed spot-kicks in the 3-2 shootout loss to Italy and were targeted on social media with the racial abuse prompting a police investigation and country-wide condemnation.
"Ted Lasso" has proved to be a huge hit for Apple TV+ with both critics and audiences and the show received 20 Emmy nominations on Tuesday (July 13), including best comedy series and best lead actor in a comedy series for Sudeikis. The 20 Emmy nods must have impressed Apple CEO Tim Cook, who turned out on Thursday to show his support and posed for pictures with Sudeikis and the cast and crew.
"(Having 20 Emmy nominations,) it puts a giant target on our back," joked Sudeikis, as he stopped to talk on the premiere's blue carpet, made in the colors of "Ted Lasso's" fictional AFC Richmond football club.
"What are you talking about? It must be nice? No. It's horrible. We're an underdog. Good lord, this is obnoxious. This is ... I'm not paying for this (premiere). No, it's lovely that this is all a, you know, an example of the way people have responded to the show, including the people that make it. And so, yeah, I'm flattered that people have watched the show, they found the show, they've spoken of the show, they've watched the show and watched it with loved ones and shared it with family. And, yeah, it's been a really, really amazing experience. I would say it only falls second place to the experience of actually making the show," he added.
Sudeikis said working on "Ted Lasso," which he co-created and writes, strengthened his love of the "beautiful game" and that he was rooting for England in the Euro 2020.
"It came damn close (Euro 2020 final). Yeah, yeah, I mean, you know, there's always the Olympics, there's always the World Cup, you know, you know, but yeah. But I do like is I like to see that football, as we call it over here, soccer is rising in awareness and appreciation here in the States because I think it is a truly, truly, and I didn't invent this phrase, the beautiful game. And I know our women's team over here has certainly led the charge there and we've got a heck of a good men's team, too so I think it's exciting times. And I know my little boy, getting ... you know, got to go to a couple of matches and enjoys watching and likes playing FIFA or at least I let him watch me play FIFA, you know, and he thinks it's real, yeah," said Sudeikis.
Asked if he was surprised a show about soccer would resonate with U.S. audiences, actor Brendan Hunt, who plays Coach Beard on "Ted Lasso," said soccer was more popular in the U.S. than people thought.
"America secretly loves soccer, pretends it doesn't, you know, like an ex-girlfriend who you just can't call but you can't stop thinking about her. And in five years, when we host the next World Cup, that's going to be when America and its ex get married again," said Hunt, who received four Emmy nominations for his work on "Ted Lasso."
"Ted Lasso" season two premieres on July 23 on Apple TV+.
