- Story Text:Malian security forces apprehended at least two men at Bamako's Grand Mosque on Tuesday (July 20), video footage showed, after the presidency said at least one attempted to stab interim president Assimi Goita.
While a group of soldiers encircled Goita for his protection, another security detail apprehended two men, pointing handguns in their faces and pinning them to the ground before leading them outside the mosque.
One of the men was then tied up and placed in the back of a military pickup truck.
Mali, the theatre of French-supported operations against al-Qaeda and Islamic State-linked insurgents for a decade, was thrown into political turmoil after a military junta led by Goita toppled President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita in August 2020.
Goita served as vice-president to transitional leader Bah Ndaw until his ouster in May.
