- Story Text: Thousands of people in Dhaka made the journey back to their hometowns on Monday (July 19) for the upcoming Eid al-Adha festival, as the South Asian country lifts its lockdown amid surging COVID-19 cases.
Authorities in Bangladesh hit a pause on its lockdown measures in time for people to travel home to celebrate the Muslim Festival of Sacrifice. The country imposed a two-week strict lockdown on July 1 to combat a surge in coronavirus cases led by the highly contagious Delta variant, with areas bordering India taking the brunt of infections.
"Most of my relatives live in the village, only my family live in Dhaka. Now as my father, mother and brothers live at home (in the village), they are waiting for us to join them to celebrate Eid together. Although it's during the coronavirus pandemic, I am expected to go," Nurul Islam told Reuters while waiting to board his ferry at the crowded Sadarghat terminal.
Bangladesh reported 231 new coronavirus deaths on Monday, taking the death toll to 18,125 and the total number of infections to 1,117,310.
