Wonder Woman Lynda Carter turns 70 on Saturday (July 24).
Born in Phoenix, Arizona in 1951, television star Lynda Carter was crowned Miss World USA in 1972 and finished in the top 15 at the Miss World pageant that year, before making her acting debut in 1974 crime series "Nakia".
Carter shot to global fame in 1975 as Diana Prince, aka Wonder Woman in a TV series of the same name.
With a twirl, followed by her arms crossed and poised for action in a red, blue and gold suit, the character first appeared on the pages of DC Comics in 1941.
"Wonder Woman" was only on U.S. television for three seasons, first on ABC and later on CBS where it finished in 1979. But the series, along with Carter's performance, have given "Wonder Woman" a long legacy as a feminist symbol and she is seen as a forerunner to the empowered heroines that are taking centre stage in Hollywood today.
In 2017, Israeli actor Gal Gadot took over the famous role on the silver screen in director Patty Jenkins's "Wonder Woman".
Gadot and Jenkins reprised the immortal Amazon warrior last year in "Wonder Woman 1984", which saw Carter play another warrior called Asteria.
In October 2016 - the 75th anniversary of the fictional character, Wonder Woman was designated as the United Nations Honorary Ambassador for the Empowerment of Women and Girls.
"All the Wonders We Can Do" initiative aimed to raise awareness of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Agenda that was adopted by the U.N. General Assembly in September 2015. The program seeks to end discrimination against women in all forms and promote their well-being.
At the event held at the U.N. headquarters and attended by Gadot and Jenkins, Carter told the assembly and a group of young girls to "embrace" Wonder Woman and be empowered by her as she was "for women ... but never against men".
Carter received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in April 2018, with Jenkins watching. The director said Carter inspired her as a girl and showed her that she did not have to choose between being rebellious or feminine, or attractive or strong.
As a music artist, Carter recorded five studio albums and three singles between 1973 and 2018. In 2009 she released "At Last" that was part "bluesy and inspired by Motown", according to the singer whose mother used to play old Blues records at home.
