- Story Text:Australia's Logan Martin said on Monday (August 2) his victory at the Men's BMX Freestyle was "still sinking in" and hoped his win will "get more eyes" on the sport back home after he secured gold at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
The 27-year-old world champion performed two-minute runs of tricks scoring top marks at the Olympics' first-ever BMX competition. Venezuela's Daniel Dhers took silver and Great Britain's Declan Brooks followed with bronze.
"I wanted to showcase this sport, I wanted to essentially get more eyes on the sport, and for people to realise that it is a professional sport. We are professional athletes and in the past, it hasn't been looked upon as that, but the past few years it has progressed that way. So to get more kids into the sport. I know for the females it is a very new sport for them, so to get more girls on bikes as well, to get more people around BMX, get people outside, I think it's an awesome move for the Olympics," Martin told reporters.
Martin built a skatepark in his backyard to train for the Olympics, an investment he said has paid off.
